"A Painting for You"   -    Maud Lewis

Before I made this figure I had made a couple of Maud Lewis carvings. The first was in a folk art style. It was about 32 inches high and she was sitting at a small tble painting.
Some time later a folk artist guy I knew asked me to carve the faces on life size carvings of Maud and Everet Lewis. What a mess he had made of the wood and then filled it in with body fill and nails of all things. But I got them done. I knew he was struggling financially and I did not want any money. I just wanted credit for doing the faces. That didn't happen. It was the last time I worked jointly with another artist.
Years later, in 2008, I wanted to make a portrait figurine of Maud that would be something I would like to have. I had carved quite a few portrait figures by then and I was getting a little better at getting a likeness. This is the resuult.
A pratron of mine, unfortunately I have forgotten her name, suggested the theme of holding out a painting and the title "A Painting For You". I really liked the idea. The small painting she holds was made from a picture of one of her paintings.
I carved this in 2008 and have kept it at quite a low profile since. I haven't tried too hard to sell it. I get a little attached to some carvings and put a little higher price on them. They go eventually but I get to have them for display for a few years.
