I saw a boat like this, at the Falls Point Wharf, when I was about 10 years old. I had been around the wharf quite a bit by then, and this looked really different. It had a canvas spray and no house like the other Cape Island boats at the wharf. It was also smaller than most of the others.
At that time all the boats were made of wood. Even though each boatshop had their little variations in design, they were all very similar.
I don't believe anyone at the wharf had a dereck on the boat at that time. They all used rollers. They also used a winch where the drive was a car axle driven by belts to the engine. The heist was similar to modern ones, with the line being pinched between two metal plates.
This boat had a winch instead, where you wrap the line around and haul the on the line to bring up the trap. I was intrigued that such a setup could work.
Note that the only navigation instruments aboard were a clock and a compass. This was common at the time.
