An old style cape Island boat with a wooden winch head - front view.

"Wood Winch Head"

I saw a boat like this, at the Falls Point Wharf, when I was very young. It had a canvas spray at the bow and no house like the other Cape Island boats at the time. It was also narrower than the other wooden boats.

The boats all used rollers and a dereck for hauling traps. They also used a winch was driven by a car axle and belts to the engine. The heist was similar to modern ones, with the line being pinched between two metal plates.

This boat had a winch where you wrap the line around and haul on the line to bring up the trap. Similar to sailboat winches today but the winch head was made of wood. I was intrigued that such a setup could work.

Note that the only navigation instruments aboard were a clock and a compass. This was common at the time.
