Kids on a wharf catching fish

"Sculpins"

When I was very young, I would sneak away to the wharf to catch sculpins in the spring. We couls sell them as lobster bait for 25 cents per pound. That was a lot of money. A bag of chips was 5 cents and a soda pop sold for 10.

I would often get together with friend in this adventure. Fishemen at th wharf would keep an eye on us but seldom said anything.

For those who may not know, sculpins are a ground feeding, inshore fish with a large head and many shrp spines.
They were valued as an inexpensive bait at the time.

I show bait cut up on the crate, 3 sculpins on the wharf, and one being caught.
The fishing lines are twine and wood is used to make the line holder.

In this work I made the boys a little older, just to aoid any controversy.
